Update 6/1/2020 : Smells Like Teen Spirit has been completed.
TWP releases templates and instructions on how to contribute to each song. If your submission is on point, it's accepted and mixed down onto the final track. You do NOT need to be Steve Vai - you just need to practice timing.

4/23/2020: Dear reddit. Thanks, but, RIP my inbox. This guide should help you get started.
To accept the most amount of submissions possible, stem mixing of thousands of tracks will be automated in the cloud with the final 24 or so tracks mixed manually.
Make your submissions for Smells Like Teen Spirit on SoundCloud for now.
Tag them with #twpnevermind so I can find them like here
Nevermind by Nirvana
We will record and mix the entire album over several months and look to release it online for free in either 2020 or 2021.
Start learning SLTS on Guitar here. Other guides/info will follow.
You MUST use this reference track to practice and record, to maintain timing.
I am a guitarist, drummer, bassist, vocalist, computer nerd, and nirvana fan of over 25 years. I have my own home studio in the SF bay area and have mixed my own cover tracks for a long time, some were ok-ish. I'm naive enough to think I can pull this off. I'm not a producer or genius mixer, so I will need help.
Everyone is indoors right now. Lots of people are uploading their Nirvana covers. Why not bring it all together at an insane scale and just see what happens. Nirvana were amazing, I wanted to start there.

It could be terrible or it could be cool like Rockin1000 (which is awesome and obviously a major inspiration for what I am doing here), but I have no idea.
Whatever it is though, you'll be on it.
For 'Smells Like Teen Spirit', one track will be panned center. The most accurate rendition of the intro riff, so if you practice, well, that could be you.
It's about the STYLE, not your equipment.
Record DIRECT with NO effects. We will reamp you into period correct equipment used on the album.
Files will be collected into Cloud Storage for pickup by distributed mixing system
DMIX is the tech that will normalize, eq and mix all of the tracks into single tracks. It will be based on Big Data distributed processing engines such as Spark with integration to open source mixing tools for continual (possibly even nightly) mixes.
Guitar inputs to DMIX may be re-amped later through equivalent outboard amps used on Nevermind.
The final mix will be mixed manually in Pro Tools or equivalent.
